A total of 27 babies have been successfully delivered through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatments at Dharumavantha Hospital's Fertility Centre, hospital authorities announced. The achievement marks a major operational milestone for the facility, which officially launched specialised local IVF services in November 2024.

Following the birth of the centre's first newborn in January 2025, clinical outcomes have continued on an upward trajectory. Over the past nine months, the hospital recorded 35 successful IVF procedures. Out of these, 27 have culminated in successful deliveries, while eight patients are currently continuing their clinical care and treatment cycles.

The establishment of domestic fertility services aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to ensure comprehensive reproductive healthcare is directly accessible within the Maldives. Operating under the IGMH and Dharumavantha Hospital network, the initiative has enabled 27 local couples to build families without having to navigate the logistical hurdles of overseas medical travel.

Infertility issues have risen across the country, historically requiring couples to travel abroad for costly IVF and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatments. Providing these options locally has significantly lessened the financial, logistical, and mental strains on families. Alongside primary reproductive care, the centre also offers fertility preservation services, allowing oncology patients to safeguard their future reproductive options prior to undergoing cancer therapy.

The local success of these procedures marks a major leap forward for the nation’s public healthcare architecture. Building on these clinical outcomes in Malé, the government is currently working to decentralise reproductive care by expanding fertility services across regional hospitals in the atolls.
