Tourist arrivals to the Maldives for the first three weeks of September recorded a modest decline of 2,134 visitors compared to the same period last year, according to the latest statistical bulletin released by the Ministry of Tourism. Between September 1 and 19, the country welcomed 89,505 holidaymakers, compared to 91,639 arrivals registered during the corresponding timeframe in 2023.

Despite the temporary monthly contraction, the nation's broader tourism trajectory remains solid, having officially crossed the 1.5 million arrival milestone for the year. The vast majority of visitors opted for the signature one-island-one-resort concept, with over 1.1 million tourists staying at luxury resorts, while guesthouses accommodated more than 300,000 guests, liveaboard safari vessels welcomed 28,596 tourists, and roughly 2,400 stayed across other licensed facilities.

Source market data indicates that China continues to dominate the arrival share, holding the top position with 284,555 tourists—representing an 18.8 percent market share. Russia retains second place with 222,055 visitors, followed closely by traditional European strongholds including the United Kingdom with 116,658 arrivals, Italy with 96,010, and Germany contributing 94,494 visitors.

The temporary slump earlier in the year was primarily driven by regional flight disruptions across Middle Eastern transit corridors following the outbreak of conflict in late February, which affected long-haul air travel routes into the Maldives. However, connectivity has steadily normalized over recent months, with August marking the strongest post-disruption recovery in monthly arrivals.

With the national target set at reaching two million tourists by year-end, Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen expressed strong confidence that the upcoming winter peak season will deliver robust growth. The minister affirmed that the sector is well-positioned for an exceptionally successful close to the year, projecting that total annual arrivals will surpass last year's figures.
