The Ministry of Finance has officially opened bidding for the construction of a dedicated 50-bed mental health hospital in Hulhumale, marking a major step toward strengthening psychiatric and psychological care across the Maldives. The government-led project aims to establish a purpose-built facility to address the growing demand for specialized treatment and alleviate pressure on existing healthcare infrastructure.

According to the announcement, interested contractors must submit their bids by 1:00 PM on the 25th of next month. Bidders are required to furnish a bid security of MVR 864,000 to participate in the process. Comprehensive project specifications, guidelines, and submission details have been made available via the finance ministry's official tender portal.

The hospital will be developed on a designated 14,000-square-foot plot in Hulhumale, financed entirely through the state budget. Parallel to the infrastructure expansion, the government is carrying out local capacity-building initiatives to train Maldivian specialists, while recruiting expatriate doctors in the interim to deploy across all regional atoll hospitals. Authorities also plan to introduce a dedicated Mental Health Bill to Parliament this year, following the recent launch of "1456," a specialized support hotline catering primarily to youth.

The expansion comes amid rising figures showing significant pressure on existing mental health services. National health data indicates that over 10,000 individuals sought consultation or treatment for various mental health conditions within the first four months of this year alone, with more than 8,000 of those consultations taking place in the Greater Male area. Young people represent the vast majority of patients accessing these services.

The urgent need for dedicated care facilities aligns with public health assessments conducted across the country. According to a 2022 study by the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 20 percent of the Maldivian population—or one in every five people—experiences symptoms of mental illness, underscoring the critical role the new facility will play in the country's public health framework.
