A foreign national who jumped into the sea from the Sinamale Bridge in the early hours of Thursday was rescued alive after being spotted clinging to one of the bridge’s pillars.

According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Coast Guard received an emergency alert regarding an individual leaping into the water from the bridge at approximately 12:44 AM. A specialised team of MNDF divers was immediately deployed to the area to initiate an urgent search-and-rescue operation.

During the search, rescue teams located the man holding onto a pillar beneath the bridge structure. Divers moved in quickly to extract him safely from the water and brought him aboard a Coast Guard vessel.

The individual was subsequently transferred into the custody of the Maldives Police Service for further observation and processing. Photographs released by the MNDF suggest the man did not appear to have sustained severe, life-threatening injuries during the fall.

Authorities have not yet officially disclosed the identity of the individual or the circumstances that led to the midnight jump. Police are continuing their inquiries into the incident.
