The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has issued an urgent directive urging seafarers and vessel operators to refrain from traveling in maritime zones placed under Yellow and Orange weather alerts. The warning follows forecasts by the Maldives Meteorological Service predicting strong winds, torrential rainfall, and exceptionally rough seas across large parts of the archipelago, prompting the military to call for heightened vigilance.

The MNDF instructed vessel captains and crews to complete mandatory reporting procedures with relevant maritime authorities prior to embarking on any voyage. Seafarers are required to verify the condition and serviceability of critical onboard safety equipment beforehand, including life jackets, marine communication radios, distress beacons, and functional dewatering bilge pumps.

Furthermore, authorities cautioned cargo vessels against overloading beyond legally permissible limits, emphasising that all freight must be properly lashed and covered with tarpaulins to prevent displacement during rough sea conditions. The military also urged every individual on board to wear life jackets throughout transit and called upon operators of diving, excursions, and water sports activities to remain exceptionally cautious of changing weather patterns.

Given that the Maldives is a low-lying island nation fundamentally reliant on sea transport for daily commuting and commerce, severe weather conditions routinely heighten the frequency of perilous maritime accidents. During intensified phases of the southwest monsoon, vessels frequently encounter dangerous incidents such as grounding on reefs, taking on water, and capsizing amidst sudden gusty squalls.

Historical rescue operations have revealed that the absence of functional safety apparatus and severe overloading remain the primary causes behind catastrophic accidents and loss of life at sea. Consequently, the MNDF Coast Guard continues to emphasise strict adherence to statutory safety regulations and appeals to the public and maritime operators to prioritise safety over schedule during inclement weather.
