The Maldives Police Service has issued a stern warning that legal action will be taken against expatriates who wear revealing attire in public spaces, citing violations of societal norms and public decency regulations.

In an official statement, the police expressed concern over recent observations indicating that some foreigners residing in the Maldives have been seen in public areas and streets dressed in attire that contravenes community standards of decency and modesty.

Law enforcement highlighted that such behaviour conflicts with established civic and cultural norms and has the potential to disturb public order and harmony. To prevent escalation, authorities reiterated their statutory mandate and affirmed that strict legal measures would be executed under the Law on Prevention of Public Social Misconduct against violators.

The police emphasised that upholding moral conduct and social decency is a civic obligation incumbent upon all residents across the country. Foreign nationals living in the Maldives were explicitly urged to respect local traditions, religious customs, and societal standards by dressing appropriately in communal spaces.

Furthermore, sponsors, employers, and individuals responsible for managing expatriate workers were cautioned to actively ensure that foreign workers under their care adhere to local social decorum.

The advisory also extended to tourism service providers, urging them to instruct visiting tourists to observe local cultural norms when in public places outside designated tourist areas. The police reiterated that failure to comply with these regulations will result in legal action against offenders.
