President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that the government is working "day and night" to resolve ongoing challenges faced by Maldivians when making online overseas purchases. The President made the remarks during the "Rayyithunge Adu" (Voice of the People) program held at the President's Office last night, responding directly to public concerns regarding digital commerce bottlenecks.

During the interactive session, a participant raised the issue of mounting hurdles when shopping on popular international e-commerce platforms such as Temu. The attendee urged the administration to find a prompt solution, noting that addressing the difficulties in card payments and online shopping would significantly boost public support for the President.

In response, President Muizzu gave assurances that finding a workable remedy to the online commerce constraints remains an urgent priority for his administration. He affirmed that dedicated efforts are actively underway around the clock and expressed confidence that, God willing, an effective resolution will be delivered to ease these constraints for consumers.

A large segment of the Maldivian public and small local entrepreneurs rely heavily on global online marketplaces to source affordable consumer goods, clothing, and essential items. The recent implementation of stringent restrictions on foreign currency card payments marks the first time that consumers in the country have faced such significant disruptions in digital cross-border trade.

The payment caps have prompted widespread public criticism aimed at both commercial banks and the government. As frustration continues to mount, consumers and micro-businesses across the Maldives remain eager for a comprehensive easing of international transaction limits to restore seamless digital shopping.
