First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has emphasized that active listening and compassionate community support can drive profound improvements in mental well-being, urging society to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Her remarks were shared in a post on X to mark World Mental Health Day, which is observed globally every year on October 10.
Highlighting that mental well-being is deeply influenced by personal connections and everyday surroundings, the First Lady noted that mental health is actively shaped through daily interactions within households, schools, workplaces, and broader community spaces. She stressed the importance of fostering empathetic environments where every individual feels heard, respected, and supported.
Madam Sajidha also underlined that people living with mental health challenges are best positioned to articulate what genuine assistance looks like. In light of this, she called for a collective transformation in how society views and speaks about mental health, urging stronger awareness to ensure people feel encouraged to seek help and know that vital support systems are readily available.
Reflecting on the power of everyday kindness and attentiveness, the First Lady stated, "How we listen to one another and provide support can bring significant positive transformations to mental well-being."
Mental health plays an integral role in shaping how individuals think, feel, and navigate life's daily challenges, with studies indicating that approximately 13 percent of the global population is affected by mental or neurological conditions. Commemorated under this year's theme, "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change," the day underscores the critical necessity of centering real lived experiences to achieve lasting social change.
