Hollywood veteran Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that his iconic character, Nick Fury, will sit out the upcoming ensemble blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, but Marvel Studios has locked in his return for the climactic follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars. The longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) star shared the revelation during a red carpet appearance, setting the stage for Fury's eventual reemergence in the multiversal saga.
Speaking to The Direct at the premiere of his film The Beast, Jackson clarified where he stands within Marvel's sprawling release slate. While Avengers: Doomsday—directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom alongside Pedro Pascal—is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, Jackson explained that the studio deliberately decided to hold Fury back until Avengers: Secret Wars arrives on December 17, 2027.
Jackson originally debuted as the legendary S.H.I.E.L.D. director in the groundbreaking post-credits scene of 2008's Iron Man, subsequently anchoring the MCU across 11 feature films and four television productions. His return in Secret Wars will mark an extended four-year absence from live-action Marvel storytelling since his dual appearances in 2023’s Disney+ series Secret Invasion and the theatrical feature The Marvels.
Opening up about Marvel’s tight-lipped creative process, Jackson revealed the blunt directives he received regarding his participation in the two upcoming tentpoles. "[Marvel] hasn't told me anything, other than, 'You're not gonna be in this movie. You'll be in the next [one],'" Jackson admitted, noting candidly that he currently has "no idea" how Fury will factor into the overarching plot.
While Marvel Studios continues to keep script specifics under lock and key, industry observers and fans view Fury’s selective deployment as a strategic storytelling move. Sidelining the veteran spymaster during the multiversal collisions of Doomsday allows Marvel to position the architect of the original Avengers as the ultimate unifying figure for Secret Wars, mirroring his Phase 1 role to rally heroes across the multiverse for the final stand.
