Hollywood producer and media proprietor David Ellison has officially taken the helm as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the newly consolidated entertainment juggernaut following the completed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery under the Skydance banner. The closing of the multi-billion-dollar megadeal cements one of the largest corporate consolidations in entertainment history, positioning the 43-year-old Skydance founder at the apex of an unprecedented media empire.
The combined corporation unites two of cinema’s most storied century-old studios—Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures—alongside powerhouse intellectual properties including DC Entertainment, HBO, and franchises such as Harry Potter, Star Trek, and Top Gun. On the digital front, the corporate union brings direct-to-consumer giants HBO Max and Paramount+ under a single streaming umbrella, while overseeing an extensive broadcast and cable footprint encompassing CBS, CNN, MTV, and Nickelodeon.
The finalisation of the transaction concludes an intense corporate tug-of-war that saw Skydance and Paramount outmanoeuvre rival bids from competitors, including Netflix, backed by substantial capital commitments from Ellison’s family, including Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. The acquisition successfully cleared its final regulatory obstacles after federal reviews and a settlement with state attorneys general in a multi-state antitrust inquiry, paving the way for the unified entity to establish its new corporate identity.
Addressing the milestone in a statement to employees and the industry, Ellison framed the merger as a transformative leap forward for legacy entertainment rather than a cost-cutting consolidation. "Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture," Ellison stated. "By combining them, we aren't rewriting history—we're equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling."
With industry veteran Casey Bloys appointed as Co-Chair and Chief Creative Officer of direct-to-consumer operations and former Mattel chief Ynon Kreiz serving as Co-CEO, the new conglomerate poses an immediate, formidable challenge to streaming titans Netflix and Walt Disney. Analysts anticipate that Ellison’s leadership will accelerate unified theatrical distribution and deep catalog cross-pollination, establishing a new operational standard across the global entertainment ecosystem.
