President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on all Maldivians to recognise the importance of building innovative, sustainable and resilient food systems that ensure access to safe, nutritious and affordable food for all.
In a statement issued on his official social media channels to mark World Food Day 2026, the President highlighted that this year’s theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” serves as a reminder that the choices made and the investments undertaken today will shape the food security of future generations. He stated that by investing in innovation, expanding domestic food production and sustainably managing natural resources, the Maldives can strengthen food security and secure a healthier, more sustainable future for its people.
The President noted that as an island nation, strengthening food security is essential to national resilience and economic sustainability. He emphasised the need to embrace new technologies, improve local production, support farmers and fishers, and protect the natural resources that sustain Maldivian livelihoods and communities.
President Dr Muizzu further outlined key steps the Government has taken to strengthen the fisheries sector, including ensuring payments to fishers within 48 hours, expanding fish storage and processing infrastructure, and introducing measures to support the fisheries industry. He also highlighted progress in agricultural development through public‑private partnerships, with projects initiated across various islands. Communities have been encouraged to use available land more effectively to expand local production, improve access to fresh fruits, and create greater opportunities for farmers.
The President stated that the Government is working to strengthen local food supply chains, improve market access for farmers and fishers, and encourage greater investment in agriculture. By combining innovation with the knowledge and experience of local producers, the Maldives can increase productivity, reduce dependence on imported food and enhance the resilience and sustainability of its food supply.
Underscoring that food security is a shared responsibility, President Dr Muizzu called on all Maldivians to work together to strengthen local food systems and support farming and fishing communities. He expressed confidence that collective efforts will ensure a reliable supply of nutritious and affordable food for all Maldivians.
The President concluded his message by calling for a nation where farmers and fishers are empowered, local food production continues to grow, and every household has access to nutritious and affordable food.
Echoing the President’s call to action, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also said that true food security means every family has access to nutritious food.
In a post on her official X account, she highlighted the critical role of individual responsibility, noting that mindful daily choices at home, such as reducing waste, supporting local produce, and embracing sustainable practices, are powerful ways for citizens to contribute to a resilient national food system.
World Food Day, observed annually on 16 October, is commemorated globally to raise awareness on food security and to promote collective action towards ending hunger. The day also marks the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, which leads international efforts to transform food systems and ensure equitable access to food.
