The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged seafarers and the public to suspend sea travel after the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) issued an Orange Alert for the region spanning from Kaafu Atoll to Vaavu Atoll due to severe weather.
According to the national weather authority, the affected central atolls are forecast to experience torrential rainfall, potential flooding, squally winds, and rough seas. In light of the deteriorating sea conditions, the MNDF advised against embarking on journeys while Yellow or Orange weather alerts remain in effect.
The defence force emphasized that if travel becomes unavoidable, vessel operators must notify the relevant authorities prior to departure. Operators have been instructed to inspect critical onboard equipment—including communication systems, bilge pumps, and safety gear—to ensure full functionality, while cargo vessels must refrain from exceeding carrying limits and ensure all cargo is securely lashed.
"We urge all passengers and crew undertaking sea travel to wear life jackets and exercise heightened vigilance," the MNDF stated in its advisory, highlighting the necessity of basic safety compliance during hazardous voyages.
In addition, organizers of diving and water sports excursions have been called upon to monitor official weather updates closely and strictly suspend maritime recreational activities until sea and weather conditions improve.
