President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has warned that trust in the United Nations is being severely eroded due to growing geopolitical tensions and the unequal enforcement of international laws. In a special message delivered on the occasion of the 81st UN Day, the President emphasised that the organisation’s credibility is fundamentally rooted in mutual trust, accountability, and unconditional respect for established international treaties and principles.
The President noted that escalating global divisions and selective adherence to global frameworks have led to catastrophic humanitarian consequences, pointing specifically to the profound devastation and immense human suffering endured by the people of Palestine. He stressed that international law must be applied equally across all nations to maintain the integrity and purpose of the UN charter.
Highlighting the structural challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), President Muizzu pointed out that unequal access to finance and modern technology, alongside the burden of unsustainable debt, continues to hinder economic resilience and sustainable development. He called for equitable international cooperation to ensure vulnerable nations are equipped to navigate rapid global shifts.
Reaffirming the national vision of the Maldives, the President stated that self-determination and sovereign policymaking are vital as the country works toward achieving developed-nation status by 2040. Achieving this ambitious goal, he emphasised, requires sustained investments in human capital, economic diversification, and building strong resilience against external economic and geopolitical shocks.
Concluding his address, President Muizzu affirmed that the Maldives remains steadfast in its dedication to justice, sovereignty, and peaceful multilateralism. He urged the United Nations to remain an inclusive global platform where the sovereignty and voices of all member states are respected, ensuring no nation's future is determined or compromised by external influence.
