A man from Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi has been sentenced to three months and two days in prison by the local magistrate court after being found guilty of issuing death threats against his biological brother.
The incident took place last July when the defendant demanded money from his brother. When his brother refused to hand over the cash, the man became hostile and explicitly threatened to kill him.
Upon receiving reports of the altercation, police officers arrived at the scene. However, rather than de-escalating the situation, the defendant blatantly repeated his death threats against his brother directly in front of the attending officers.
In its ruling delivered last week, the Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate Court stated that the charges against the man were proven based on his own confession, leading to a sentence of three months and two days behind bars.
Although the defense requested that the punishment be converted to a fine or house arrest, the court rejected the plea. The court noted that the defendant failed to show financial capability to pay a fine, and ruled that alternative penalties were inappropriate given the nature of the offense and his past criminal record.
