Maldive Gas has announced that retail cooking gas prices will not increase, despite a temporary reduction in the volume of gas filled into cylinders starting this Saturday. The company stated that the measure was introduced to manage and ration distribution after surging global market prices triggered severe logistical constraints in importing liquefied petroleum gas into the Maldives.
Under the temporary rationing measures, standard cylinder capacities will see proportional decreases across all categories. The commonly used 10kg domestic cylinder will now be filled with 7kg of gas, while 22kg cylinders will receive 14kg. Commercial 45kg cylinders will be filled with 31kg of gas for the duration of the supply control period.
The national utility emphasised that retail billing will strictly reflect the actual weight of gas dispensed into each cylinder at the existing standard unit rates. Customers will not face price inflations or hidden surcharges, ensuring consumers pay solely for the reduced quantity provided rather than the full cylinder capacity.
To address ongoing supply vulnerabilities, Maldive Gas highlighted that concrete infrastructure work is underway to significantly expand national fuel storage facilities. The infrastructure project is geared toward shielding the domestic market from external price volatility and recurrent international supply chain bottlenecks.
Once the storage expansion project is completed, the company expects domestic holding capacity to accommodate a full three-month reserve of gas at a time. The utility reiterated that this expanded reserve will establish long-term energy security and bring a definitive resolution to import disruptions across the country.
