EyeCare Hospital, in collaboration with EyRIS, has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) powered retinal screening service aimed at early detection of critical vision-threatening conditions. The service was officially unveiled at the Maldives Health and Family Expo, currently underway at Hulhumalé Central Park.
The launching ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Health, Ahmed Hamdhoon Naseer, alongside the Managing Director of EyeCare, Dr. Abdulla Zahir. The integration of artificial intelligence into EyeCare's diagnostic offerings marks a major advancement in local eye care, enabling early identification of ocular disorders and streamlining immediate clinical referrals for patients requiring urgent intervention.
During screening sessions, specialised fundus cameras capture high-resolution images of the retina, which are subsequently analysed via EyRIS’s proprietary 'SELENA+' deep-learning AI system. The automated diagnostic platform rapidly identifies key markers of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, generating comprehensive evaluation reports within moments to ensure timely therapeutic action.
EyeCare stated that combining advanced AI diagnostics with expert ophthalmic guidance significantly accelerates clinical decision-making while maintaining high accuracy. The hospital emphasised that its primary objective is to make preventative screening accessible across the population and foster broader community awareness regarding proactive eye health management.
The newly introduced AI screening service is currently accessible at EyeCare's dedicated booth at the Maldives Health and Family Expo, which runs from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM through tomorrow. Moving forward, the permanent screening facility will be operational at EyeCare Hospital on Orchid Magu in Malé.
