The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has warned seafarers and coastal communities to exercise caution as nationwide inclement weather is projected to intensify, bringing rough seas and gusty winds over the next five days. According to meteorological authorities, widespread rain and thunderstorms will impact all regions of the country, with conditions deteriorating further heading into next week.
A MET official confirmed that heavy downpours are anticipated in several atolls over the next 24 hours, alongside scattered showers elsewhere. While prevailing average winds and sea conditions currently remain moderate, authorities cautioned that sudden squalls could trigger abruptly rough waters and treacherous conditions without much prior warning.
The weather system has already begun impacting the archipelago, with active rainbands drenching northern and southern atolls since yesterday. Latest atmospheric models indicate that the capital city, Malé, will experience significant rainfall beginning tomorrow morning, accompanied by localized flooding risks in low-lying urban areas.
Maritime conditions are expected to worsen significantly from Tuesday onward, as wind speeds strengthen considerably across the Maldives. The meteorological office noted that the intensifying winds will directly churn up open waters, making sea transport and inter-atoll boat travel hazardous throughout the mid-week period.
